Pink Floyd appeared at The Marquee Club in Wardour Street, London, England. During the early 1960s a new generation of British rhythm and blues bands such as The Rolling Stones, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, and The Animals forged a new era in rock music at the Marquee.


04/03/1956

Elvis Presley appeared on ABC-TV's 'The Milton Berle Show' live from the flight deck of the USS Hancock in San Diego, California. He performed 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Shake Rattle And Roll' and 'Blue Suede Shoes'. It was estimated that one out of every four Americans saw the show.

Lonnie Donegan was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'My Old Man A Dustman', his third No.1. Donegan became the first British artist to enter the UK chart at No.1, the only other artist to achieve this feat at this time was Elvis Presley. The song which was recorded live at the Bristol Hippodrome was a music hall novelty song.

Buddy Knox became the first artist in the Rock 'n' Roll era to write his own number one hit when 'Party Doll' topped the US singles chart. Knox would go on to score four more US Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1961.

Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show got their picture on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine after their hit, 'The Cover of Rolling Stone' reached No. 6 on the US singles chart. According to members of the group, they really did buy five copies for their mothers, just like the song said.

The Shadows had their fifth and final UK No.1 single with 'Foot Tapper'.
